My Child is in Speech... What Does That Mean?
As a speech pathologist for Arlington Community Schools, I work with children who have difficulties in many areas including speech sounds, language, fluency, and voice. I also work with children who need Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Speech SoundsWhen you think of a child receiving speech therapy, this is usually what you think of. I help children learn how to properly produce sounds that they have difficulties with.
|
Language
Some children may have difficulty acquiring language abilities such as reading comprehension, vocabulary, and sentence structures. With these children I help them better express themselves. Language disorders can come in different forms such as language delay, written language disorders (reading difficulties), spoken language disorders (comprehension and expression difficulties), and social communication disorders (functional use difficulties).

Fluency
Children who stutter are referred to as fluency clients. This is not to be confused with reading fluency that is worked within the classroom. I work with children who have difficulty expressing themselves due to the repetitions and prolongations that are characteristic of their speech.
|
Voice
Some children have vocal quality problems such as speaking harshly and not using the part of their mouth to block air from going in their nose. I work with these children on ways to speak properly without hurting their bodies and how to take care of their vocal cords.
|
Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Some children are unable to communicate their wants and needs verbally and, therefore, require a device to successfully communicate to their full extent.
